Frequently Asked Questions and Answers Why should I work with an educational consultant? Most families are in crisis when they begin the search for an appropriate placement for their troubled child or teen. The stress of dealing with an “at risk” child is overwhelming and affects everyone in the family. On the Internet every school/program website “promises” to meet the needs of every child. Therapeutic schools are extremely expensive and the emotional investment is enormous. Our team of professionals knows the placement options. Kim is an experienced and licensed therapist who specializes in crisis interventions. She has also visited, and stands behind, every program she recommends. Does Rubin Cohen Educational Resources only work with troubled teens? Absolutely not! We have a broad range of experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults who have a wide spectrum of unique needs. Many of our clients have significant learning and behavioral needs as well as psychiatric diagnoses. Other students do not exhibit any behavioral problems but are in need of LD and/or ADHD support. Many of our clients need advisement for traditional boarding schools and colleges. We have extensive experience with therapeutic/emotional growth schools, as well as with boarding schools that provide structure, individualized instruction, and remediation for attention and/or learning problems. We place children as young as six years old as well as young adults. College consulting and financial aid advisement is available for LD and traditional college students. My child is adopted. Will she feel abandoned if I place her out of our home? This is a very sensitive issue. Our team is extremely skilled at working with adopted children and their families. In fact, Kim has an adopted daughter. We only refer adopted children to programs we are confident can work with their adoption issues. Our ultimate goal is to strengthen family bonds and develop healthy communication. What if my son or daughter doesn’t want to go? Until the age of eighteen you have the right to place your child without his or her consent. Rubin Cohen Educational Resources works with several transportation services and can help you make arrangements to get your child safely to the appropriate program. What happens if my child’s placement doesn’t work out? It is possible that an initial placement will not work out from the standpoint of your family or the school/program. In that case, we will work with your family to find another educational program. You will not incur any additional consulting fees for additional placements within the first year of your contract How much does a typical school or program cost? Traditional boarding schools generally range from $25,000 to $35,000 per year. Transitional schools, that bridge the gap between therapeutic and traditional boarding schools, range from $30,000 to $40,000 per year. Therapeutic and emotional growth schools and programs are more costly than traditional schools ($3,500 to $8,500 per month). Wilderness programs range from $350 - $445 per day. What if I cannot afford the kind of help or educational setting my child needs? Our consultants will guide you through process of seeking alternative funding sources and educational loans. Although we cannot guarantee financial assistance, there may be avenues you have not considered. What if our family lives out-of-state? Rubin Cohen Educational Resources maintains offices in Santa Fe, New Mexico and New York City and works with families nationwide. We are familiar with educational institutions and programs throughout the U.S. and also work with selected programs that operate abroad. Our consultants will schedule an initial meeting either in your hometown or via telephone. The remainder of the placement process is conducted via phone, fax, and email. We are in close contact with our clients for one full year, whether they are local or out-of-state.
